Hi, I’m Travis Layton, but most people know me online as Trav in the Bush.

I’m a bird photographer, workshop instructor, and online educator who loves helping people capture those precious moments in nature. Whether we are standing on a rugged coastline at sunrise or waiting quietly in a hide as wings sweep overhead, my goal is to help you feel confident, capable, and inspired every time you lift your camera.

In 2025, I became a Nikon Canada Ambassador, a milestone I’m incredibly proud of. I’ve also had the chance to collaborate with organizations like Cranbrook Tourism, Visit Arizona, B&H Photo, Birda App, The BC Bird Trail, and more.

Across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, I’ve built a community of over 600,000 nature lovers through educational content, tutorials, and storytelling. But offline is where the real magic happens. There is something special about learning side by side in the field, refining technique in real time, and sharing those split second wildlife encounters that make bird photography so addictive.

🥾 From Wilderness Guide to Workshop Instructor

Before I was ever a photographer, I was a full-time wilderness guide, leading multi-day expeditions by foot, sea kayak, and dog sled across Canada. For nearly 5 years, I spent more nights in a tent than a bed, guiding guests from around the world through some of the wildest landscapes this country has to offer. Guiding in remote environments taught me how to read conditions, adapt quickly, and create meaningful outdoor experiences.

Today, I bring that same guiding passion into bird photography education. Through Trav in the Bush, I lead small group workshops around the world and create digital learning resources designed to help photographers grow in skill, confidence, and creative vision. My approach blends technical mastery with patience and storytelling so you leave not just with strong images, but with a deeper understanding of how to consistently create them.
