" Well organized, great workshop! Ended up with shots I had no idea I was capable of taking."
"Travis is a top-notch wildlife photographer. He took the time to share his knowledge of photographing bald eagles and taught us what to look for so we could anticipate the shot. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend booking a workshop with him — you'll have a great time and learn a ton!"
"I had the pleasure of joining Trav on a wildlife photography tour and I must say it was an absolutely incredible experience! Trav's passion for wildlife and photography was contagious and his knowledge of local wildlife was truly impressive."
"When I first connected with Travis, I was looking for insight on how to step up my bird photography. Not only did he provide valuable insights, but he also gave actionable criticisms that led to immediate results the very next day. I can’t recommend Travis enough, especially if you’re worried about sharing your work and opening yourself up to critique. He is incredibly friendly, professional, and creates an easy learning experience."
“Thanks to Travis’s newsletters and videos, I started seeing the beauty in even the most common birds. I’ve been learning as many tricks from him as I can — and it paid off: my photo was recently published in National Geographic Hungary!”
"Travis, What fun to have all of your tips, tricks, and examples in written form. I have been on one of your tours and watch all of your videos. I have learned so much. The ebook is the icing on the cake. It’s a beautiful book and having all of the techniques in writing is really helpful. Thank You."

Newfoundland in July is beautiful, lush, and alive with seabird activity — but the weather can still be unpredictable. While you'll likely enjoy warmer temperatures than in May/June, it’s still common to encounter wind, coastal fog, and sudden rain, especially near the ocean. The key is to dress in layers and be prepared for anything.
Here’s what I recommend bringing:
👕 Base Layers
Light, breathable long-sleeve shirt (merino wool is great)
Short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirts for warm days
Comfortable, moisture-wicking underlayers
🧥 Mid + Outer Layers
Lightweight fleece or soft-shell jacket
Insulated down or synthetic jacket (yes, even in July — early mornings and evenings can be chilly)
Waterproof rain jacket or shell
Optional: Packable poncho for quick coverage
👖 Bottoms
Quick-dry hiking pants
Optional: Rain-resistant pants or gaiters
Shorts for warmer inland days
👟 Footwear
Closed-toe hiking shoes or trail runners with good grip
Comfortable, merino wool or synthetic socks (avoid cotton)
Optional: Water-resistant shoes or waterproof boots
🧢 Accessories
Brimmed hat or cap for sun protection
Sunglasses
Light scarf or neck gaiter (can double as wind protection)
Light gloves (optional but helpful for early mornings)
Toque or beanie (coastal mornings can still be cold)
🌞 Other Essentials
Sunscreen (yes, even in fog — UV still cuts through!)
Bug spray (mosquitoes and black flies can be active depending on location)
Reusable water bottle
Small backpack or daypack
📷 Photography Comfort
Yoga mat or garden kneeling pad (great for lying prone or kneeling on rocky ground)
📍The full itinerary is shared with confirmed participants (after a non-refundable deposit is received). Please note: specific locations, timing, and activities may shift based on weather, wildlife conditions, and local availability. Flexibility allows us to adapt and make the most of each day!
Each workshop includes time with experienced local photography guides who know these areas inside and out.
We’ll also head out on a licensed marine excursion operated by an independent marine company for seabirds (and possibly whales!) from the water — always a highlight.
We’ll stay in locally owned inns full of Newfoundland character, arranged in advance and chosen for comfort and proximity to our shooting areas.
Expect thoughtful photography, beautiful coastal scenery, collaboration with knowledgeable locals, and that warm Newfoundland hospitality people always talk about.
Walking distances to viewing areas are generally short to moderate and take place on established paths and coastal terrain. Expect walks of approximately 15–25 minutes at a relaxed pace. Surfaces may be uneven in places, and some sessions begin or end in low light or fog — part of the Newfoundland atmosphere!
Be prepared to sit, stand, and stay in a prone position for long periods of time. Bringing a pair of knee pads or even a yoga mat is recommended.
You’ll want to book your flight into St. John’s International Airport (YYT) in Newfoundland.
The workshop begins in St. John’s, and I’ll personally pick you up from your hotel on the start date. The airport and downtown are close together (about a 15–20 minute drive), and I recommend booking a hotel in downtown St. John’sfor easy access to restaurants, shops, and our meeting point.
If you’re unsure where to stay, I’ll share some recommendations after you book.
